Introduction
The Refinement panel is a great web part of filtering the search of elements on your intranet.Â
The refinement panel is linked to the content-search web part, allowing you to search certain elements in one click.
Refiner values are built depending on the lined search(es) and the associated result(s).

The "Connect to" section
To work, this web part must be connected to a content search web part on the same page. The elements displayed by the content search web part will be able to be refined.
If you have several content search web parts on your page, you can select which one you want to link by selecting the right checkbox.

Display the search filter by the refiner. Note that the search box won't be there if all the refiner values are displayed (in the example the see more link shows that there are another values not displayed, so the search box is there) |

After this, you will be able to manage your refiners.
- You must click “Add a refiner” to add one. As you do this, the following form will appear.
In the field “Configuration for”, you must precise the property's name. This property should be defined as "refinable" (What is a refinable property?)
Then you can set the default display name of the refiner you just created and add languages if needed, by selecting the desired language in the “Add a language” dropdown. You can erase any added language by clicking on the cross mark next to it.
- After that, many display templates can be selected on the “Display Template” dropdown.
Date range - Adapted for date properties as Creation date, publication date, ... | |
Multi-value - Adapted for text properties (text, choices, taxonomy, ...), the user cans select many value and apply the filter | |
Singe values - Adapted for text properties (text, choices, taxonomy, etc.), the filter is applied once the user selects one value. The user cans choose only one value at a time. | |
Yes-No - Adapted for boolean properties (yes/no). | Â |
- After selecting the display, a new configuration item will appear. The following caption can illustrate the creation and the editing of a refiner.

Important restrictions
- You cannot add two refiner webpart on the same page.
- You cannot have a refiner webpart and the preferences feature enabled on the same page.
